On April 23, we celebrate World Book Day, a date chosen by UNESCO to honor reading and promote love for books around the world. Every year, a city is chosen to carry the World Book Capital title, valid for 12 months from this date.
In 2025, Rio was recognized with this international honor, becoming the first Portuguese-speaking city to receive this title — a historical landmark and a recognition for projects of excellence aimed at promoting reading in the municipality.
From April 23, when the official opening ceremony takes place at the Carlos Gomes Theatre, Rio starts a year full of cultural, social and educational activities that will transform the city into a true reading laboratory. The project proposes the creation of new public policies for books and reading, as well as events designed for all audiences.
The opening show will honor great authors of Brazilian literature through artistic performances, marking the beginning of a year that will place reading at the center of Rio's cultural life.
Check out some of the programmed actions:
- Biennial of the Book (June): The traditional literary fair comes with a new proposal, bringing immersive attractions like a literary Ferris wheel and a maze of stories — in addition to thousands of books for all tastes.
- Night with Books: Night meetings with reading wheels and literary debates, which will take place in April, September and November.
- Book Parade Rio 2025: Outdoor exposure in the famous molds Cow Parade, carrying thematic sculptures of books through the streets of the city.
- River of Books: Installation of book exchange points in places of great circulation, such as train stations, subway and the Gentleness Terminal.
- Editorial Academy Jr. (June): Training course for young people who wish to enter the publishing market, offering training and opportunity for professional growth.
