The reopening of Museum of the Republic, located in the Palace of the Catete, already has date to happen. The cultural space opens again the first floor for the public from 16 July (Wednesday). This stage marks an important milestone in the space restoration project, which houses part of the historical collection of the Brazilian Republic.
The resumption of the visitation coincides with the opening of the exhibition Chronicles of a Barbarian, by cartoonist Carlos Latuff. The show brings together cartoons produced during the Covid-19 pandemic, with criticism of the social and political impacts of the period.
While the famous “Quarto de Getúlio”, on the third floor, remains temporarily closed, part of the collection related to Getúlio Vargas will be exhibited on the ground floor.
The museum runs from Wednesday to Sunday, from 11h to 17h (with entrance until 16h30), and the entrance is free. The schedule for school visits will be available from August 1, through the email mr.educa@museus.gov.br.
The historical garden of the Catete Palace is still open every day from 8am to 6pm. About 250 meters long, the space gathers artificial lake, bridges, cave, waterfall and sculptures.
History
The Nova Friburgo Palace, the current Catete Palace, built between 1858 and 1867 by the merchant and coffee farmer Antônio Clemente Pinto, Baron of New Friburgo, was consecrated as a monument of great historical, architectural and artistic importance. Space has become a symbol of the economic power of Brazil's elite slave-coffee cultor. His conception in eclectic style is the result of the work of renowned foreign artists, such as architect Gustav Waehneldt and painters Emil Bauch, Gastão Tassini and Mario Bragaldi.
Republican headquarters for nearly 64 years, 18 presidents used their facilities. The Catete Palace, based on Presidential Decree of March 8, 1960, was then organized to house the Republic Museum, inaugurated on November 15 of the same year. To learn more, access the link.
