On the day 14 June At 3 p.m. Imperial Palace Cultural Center, a special unit of Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) located in Rio, will start a new exhibition season that will be available until August 10. The entrance is free, and the shows will occupy several rooms of the historical building located in the Center, presenting unpublished works in various formats that address current themes, ancient traditions and the artistic process.
Highlight in programming, exhibition “Atelier Panorama”, artist Luiz Aquila Celebrate your 80s. The exhibition offers the public an immersion in the creative universe of the painter, gathering about ten years of production in 30 medium and large paintings, in addition to more than 15 engravings and 18 drawings, grouped under the title “Coral of Paper”. At the entrance, an enlarged black and white photograph of the Aquila studio welcomes visitors. The exhibition is distributed in three rooms and includes smaller drawings displayed on glass tables, as well as an album of numbered screen printing.
Another important exhibition is “Alto Baroque”, by André Griffo, which presents an overview of his 14 years of career with more than 50 works between paintings and installations, many unpublished. Curated by Juliana Gontijo, the show occupies the main courtyard, three halls on the first floor and two on the second floor of the Imperial Palace. This is Griffo's first individual exhibition in an institution in Rio de Janeiro, after participation in collectives and individual exhibitions at Centro Cultural São Paulo and at the Palace of Arts in Belo Horizonte.
“The wind continues, however”, by Miguel Afa, brings together works produced between 2023 and 2025 and represents a moment of consolidation of the artist's career, which began in 2001 making graffiti in the streets of Complexo do Alemão, its community of origin.
Also unprecedented, the exhibition “Alair Gomes: eroticism in the beautiful”, under curated by Luiz Pizarro, brings about 60 black and white photographs of the photographer, coming from the German journalist Klaus W. Images, preserved for more than 25 years, include series acquired over the last decades through exchanges and purchases directly with Alair, revealing to the public a little known facet of his work.
Inspired by the images of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, Amanda Coimbra presents “Starlight echoing”, curated by Natalia Quinderé. The exhibition brings together 35 works produced since last year in various formats, including photographs, light boxes, videos and optical instruments, in a room with soft lighting and darkened environment, which invites contemplation and immersion in the mysteries of the universe.
Complementing programming, Terreiro gallery gets the show “ROCADA: outbreak of desires of the Earth”, artist Livia Moura, in partnership with the Lã Mulheres Rural Mountain Cooperative. There are 15 large-format paintings made with natural pigments and materials such as wool, earth, mica, pirarucu leather and bee wax, which connect to an installation of about 50 meters: a hanging loom in the form of a tree of life called placentear. The yarns come from old equipment used for the processing of wool, which, at the opening of the exhibition, will be handled by women from the interior of Minas Gerais, which will help in the assembly of the work.
