One night to celebrate 30 years of music and 500 years of poetry. Next Wednesday, June 11th, Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, in the center of Rio, receives a special concert that marks three emblematic dates: the 250 years of the launch of the fundamental stone of the temple, the 30 years of the Candelária Project and the 5th Centenary of the birth of Luís de Camões, considered the largest poet in the portuguese language.
The Portuguese soprano Carla Caramujo, accompanied by the Atlas Quartet and the bassist André Geiger, plays Stabat Mater, by Luigi Boccherini, in his original version for soprano and string quintet. A night when art meets the sacred, music finds the word, and the past echoes in the present, in one of the most symbolic monuments of the country.
Over the centuries, the temple has undergone architectural and artistic transformations, involving names such as Mestre Valentim, João Zeferino da Costa, Henrique Bernardelli, Oscar Pereira da Silva and Rodolfo Pinto do Couto. Its monumental facade facing Guanabara Bay, its dome in Portuguese lioz stone, its stained glass windows and pulpits art nouveau make Candelaria one of the most beautiful churches in Brazil — and a mandatory point of visit for those who want to understand the historical and spiritual soul of the city.
Three celebrations in one night
The June 11 concert also marks the 30th anniversary of the Candelaria Project, an initiative aimed at promoting classical music and cultural formation in the sacred space. Over three decades, the project has brought important names of national and international music, keeping alive the tradition of free concerts and accessible to the population.
This year, the concert gained even more meaning by honoring the 500 years of the birth of Luís de Camões, author of The Lusiads, poet of longing and the universality of the Portuguese language. His work, symbol of Lusophone identity, finds echo on the walls of Candelaria , a space that blends perfectly memory, value and beauty.
