UNESCO granted the Valongo Pier the title of Cultural Heritage
The Archaeological Site Cais do Valongo was named UNESCO World Heritage Site on 9 July. Located in the port area of the city, the old stone pier rediscovered under tons of land during the renovation works of Porto Maravilha, today is exposed and open for visitation after the recovery of the area. The site was the main port of landing of slave ships with enslaved Africans in Brazil and is part of the history of the country. The space is part of Porto Maravilha, in the Center of Rio, and is located in an area known as Small Africa, where the Suspended Gardens of Valongo are still located; both can be visited daily.
