From Bethlehem to Rio! The Amazon Itinerant Museum (MIA) lands in the capital of Rio de Janeiro on 13 March, at Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-RJ), in the Flamengo, with the exhibition “Passed, Present, Futures”. The exhibition proposes reflections on the past, present and possible futures of cities, addressing topics such as urbanization, ancestry and climate justice.

The exhibition invites the public to think of ways of coexistence and adaptation to the impacts of the climate crisis, such as flooding, heat waves and landslides, increasingly present in the daily lives of cities. The immersive experience brings together paintings, maps, videos and photographs that connect science, architecture and ancestral knowledge from an anticolonial perspective.

Created in 2022 by the Laboratório da Cidade, an organization based in Belém (PA), the project has already passed through capitals such as Manaus, São Luís and Brasília. In each visited city, the museum incorporates works of local artists to its collection. In the Rio edition, the works of artists Thaís Iroko and Leid Ane, whose research addresses memory, territory, body and the experiences of black and peripheral women, begin to be part of the exhibition.

The passage through Rio also highlights the dialogue between Amazon and Atlantic Forest. The city houses the largest urban forest in the world, with about 12,500 hectares protected by the Pedra Branca State Park in the West Zone.
