The newspaper The Globo announces annually the winners of the Rio Gastronomy Show Award 2025, which celebrates the restaurants and chefs that stood out in the last year. Check out below, with Globo review:
Best Chef: Thomas Troisgros (Oseille and ToTo)
It was a great year for Thomas Troisgros, who more than ever consolidated his name as one of the most prominent and most versatile chefs in the Rio food scene. In front of two successful houses with his signature, the stripped Toto and the refined Oseille, he also celebrated an important achievement: his first Michelin star, granted to Oseille in 2025. In Toto, an informal restaurant full of affective recipes (which in 2024 won the award for best value), Thomas serves dishes as a chicken heart with oyster sauce (R$ 50), caramelized orange wings (R$ 36) and pappardelle with meat ragu (R$ 72). Upstairs, the Oseille (Sourty in French) works, a sophisticated space in which the chef exercises his (even) more authorial vein. There the scheme is tasting menu: are seven steps (R$ 650, or more R$ 440 with harmonization), served on a counter with 16 seats.

Natural of Aracaju, values local fish. Its dishes include hot pulpo (R$ 59), crab sausage (R$ 62) and matured fish on coal (R$ 190). Monique brings freshness and simplicity to the taste of the sea.

Best French: Box 201
John Paul Frankenfeld appeared as a rising star — and that only brings him up. Here in Rio and also in the eyes of Michelin Guide inspectors. But none of this happened overnight. In front of the discreet and charming Casa 201, elected the best French restaurant in the edition, the chef has road — national and international. Of German descent, but with French classical training, he was professor of the professional course of Le Cordon Bleu. And it stands out among all the chefs in the city for a rare differential: it does practically everything it serves. And that includes the inputs themselves. From mustard to butter, from cheese to beer. This month, for example, is serving even sake made by himself. Since opening House 201 two years ago — in society with the restoration Cris Julião — Frankenfeld frequently updates the tasting menu (R$ 660, or more R$ 420 with harmonization).

Best Japanese: San Omasake
The feat is to stir the chopsticks and raise the sake glasses: the little San Omakase, which serves only eight people per round and dedicates itself to the purest traditions of Japanese cuisine, again won the prize for the best Japanese in the city. With Michelin star renewed this year, the space is a small jewel, all in clear wood, with counter where, on the one hand, is master André Kawai, ambassador of sushi in Brazil, escorted by his most elegant team; and on the other, customers, who closely accompany the assembly of each piece of tasting, with the finest delicacies of the day.
The sequence is breathtaking: 15 plates and, for those who choose, almost the same number of types of sakes, coming from the various provinces of Japan, harmonised with each fish. Best Vegetarian: Teva
Teva is 100% natural. More than a healthy kitchen house, it is a restaurant where nothing comes to the table — in the units of Ipanema and Copacabana — contains harmful health components. No pesticides, trans or saturated fat, white sugar or ultra-processed. It is also one of the few vegan houses in Rio, with the strict screen of chef Daniel Biron. In front of the two units, Biron sees in Teva Copacabana a wider space, which also works as deli. There are shelves with natural products and even a line of cakes. On the menu, salads such as vegan caesar, made with dehydrated mushrooms, home yoghurt sauce and sourdough croutons (R$56), share space with more full-bodied recipes, such as the croque monsieur in the house brioche, filled with smoked tofu, cashew chestnut bechamel, mozzarella and vegetable parmesan (R$48).
In Ipanema, the chef now incorporated Amazonian flavors: apim cake with jaca to the tucupi and jambu, served with guava sauce and cumari pepper (R$ 50); and tofu empanado with vatapá (R$ 84), made with homemade coconut milk, shiitake and peppers, plus grilled okra, coconut jasmin rice and banana farofa with herbs and chestnuts. Among the classics, the season kebab with quinoa (R$ 84) and the spicy ramen with misso dashi, tofu, broccoli, shiitake, edamame, alga and nori (R$ 88). To close, Cumaru cheesecake with açaí (R$ 44), made with chestnut cheese. Those kind of desserts, not afraid to be happy.

Best Pizzeria: Iron and Flour
It's been 13 years since New York chef Sei Shiroma went out on the streets of Rio with a wood oven mounted in the trunk of the car, selling his pizzas. It worked so well that Iron and Flour today adds five addresses — and this year, it renewed the title of the best pizzeria in the piece. Crunchy pasta and innovative toppings (here is the invitation to eat with your hands). His creations, moreover, are in the ranking of the best in the world (and 4th in Latin America) by the Italian guide 50 Top. The rossa forehead (R$ 82) combines fior di latte, roasted cherry tomatoes, bologna with pistachio, stracciatella and pistachio pesto. The lamborghini (R$ 72) takes lamb palette, date, fior di latte, smoked mozzarella, yogurt sauce and sishô — sales champion in all units.
This year, another novelty: the unit of the Shopping Leblon brings a more Italian side of Shiroma, with dishes beyond the round ones. In common, the powerful wood oven. The bolognese lasagna passes through it and arrives at the table with the crispy edges (R$ 79): four very fine layers of green pasta, gratined with padano money. A show. “All the pastas are made in the house, by me, with Italian flour and redneck egg”, says the Chinese chef mezzo (by mother), Japanese mezzo (by father). Now, he launches his first sweet pizza: mozzarella, nocciola syrup and chocolate, pistachio cream with white chocolate, pistachio speckled and caramelized hazelnuts in wood (R$68). Champion.

Best Sweet: Frédéric Epicerie
What's beautiful is to be shown. No wonder, the creations of the Belgian Frédéric de Maeyer are displayed in the window. Even those who prefer the balcony end up taking a little walk inside, diving into the chef's thorough work. In the lobby are the buns of the house. Deep, protected, the chef's jewels: candy and handmade chocolates. Despite the abundance, “whatever” reigns there: any choice is right. The chocolate fondant (R$ 25), with crispy base of Belgian chocolate to milk and hazelnuts, covered by creamy ganache, is fundamental. The nut cake and apricot (R$19), irresistible. Cat tongue appears in more adult version, made with white Belgian chocolate and half bitter 54.85%. The pure bars are from Callebaut, of course (R$35). Bonbons rocher (R$ 9), with a mix of chestnuts, are also bathed in intense Belgian chocolate 54.5%.
To eat there or take, the speculos (R$ 9), spice cookie covered with the same chocolate, is a treat. The house waffle (R$29) can come with butter, honey or jelly — and it doesn't need more. With a wide menu, there are good choices at any time of the day, but brunch is the most disputed moment. Especially for those who don't give up a good egg. There are seven options, such as coconut (R$ 42), red egg with spinach cream, cheese and bread to suck. In the salt wing, sandwiches are excellent, such as roast beef with mustard and honey sauce, arugula, tomato and pesto, in the ciabatta (R$ 55). A full ride.
