Rio continues to reaffirm its vocation as one of the country's main Bohemian cities. A survey by the Prefeitura do Rio, conducted through the Riotur and the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE), reveals that the sector of bars and restaurants was responsible for the creation of approximately 18.9 thousand new formal jobs between 2021 and 2025.
According to the study, the municipality currently has about 5.8 thousand bars and restaurants, which formally employ 65.6 thousand workers. Together, these establishments move a salary mass of R $ 1.9 billion, a value that represents the sum of income paid to professionals in the sector.
The data, based on the General Register of Employees and Unemployed (Caged) and the Annual Social Information List (Rais), both from the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MTE), show the relevance of the segment to the Rio economy. Bars and restaurants account for 4.1% of the city's establishments and concentrate 2.6% of formal jobs.
In comparison with the national scenario, Rio has higher participation. Throughout Brazil, the sector represents 3.1% of the establishments and 1.6% of the formal jobs. On the other hand, the capital of Rio de Janeiro concentrates 3.1% of the country's bars and restaurants and accounts for 4.5% of the sector's jobs.
The figures reinforce the importance of gastronomy and nightlife as engines for economic development and job generation, as well as highlighting the strategic role of the sector for tourism and culture in the city.
