The Italian Institute of Culture of Rio de Janeiro promotes, on November 19, the exhibition of the documentary We Were Here: The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe by Italian filmmaker Fred Kudjo Kuwornu. The session, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., is part of the Black Awareness Day program and will be followed by a debate with the director and writer Marton Olympio, who will mediate the conversation with the public.
The film revisits a little discussed chapter in European history by investigating the presence of Africans and black people in countries such as Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands during the Renaissance. The production brings together testimonies of art historians, researchers of black studies, curators and activists to discuss how these figures appear represented in classical works and what role they played at the time.
ServiceTimetable: 6:30.
Location: Teatro Italy
