One of the greatest classics of the Brazilian musical theater returns to Rio with a new reading. From 6 August, "Opera of the Rascal", Chico Buarque, arrives at Multiplan Theatre for a short season. The montage, directed by Jorge Farjalla, proposes a contemporary rereading of the work, preserving the strength of the original text and dialoguing with elements of Brazilian popular culture.
Set in Rio, the musical follows the story of Max Overseas Navalha, a charismatic smuggler who secretly marries Teresinha, daughter of the owners of a network of brothels. The union triggers a plot marked by disputes of power, corruption, blackmail and betrayals, bringing together characters that transit between marginality and backstage of society.
In this new staging, Jorge Farjalla approaches the universe created by Chico Buarque of references to Afro-Brazilian traditions, incorporating elements of the Umbanda to the scenic construction. The proposal establishes a dialogue between the original dramaturgy, inspired by Bertolt Brecht's Three Vinténs Opera, and cultural manifestations that reinforce the popular character of the work.
