With the translation and direction of Luís Artur Nunes, the Brazilian montage promises to thrill the public with the same dramatic force that consecrated the text on American stage and, more recently, on film screens. In 2022, “The Whale” was adapted to the cinema by Darren Aronofsky and earned Brendan Fraser the Academy Award for Best Actor for his moving performance.
In the play, Zé de Abreu lives an English teacher in prison and with severe obesity, who tries to reestablish ties with his teenage daughter. To give life to the character of nearly 300 kilos, the actor uses a facial prosthesis and a costume with filling and air conditioning.
Acclaimed by criticism since its debut in 2012, “The Whale” is one of the best known works by Samuel Hunter, an author recognized for portraying with sensitivity topics such as isolation, human fragility and redemption. Set in a small American city, the play investigates the difficulties of affective reconnection in the midst of pain and regret.
