The Copacabana Theatre Palace receives the national debut of CHOQUE! Looking for Life Signs Intelligent, solo show starring Danielle Winits and directed by Gerald Thomas. The montage revisits the classic of the 1985 American playwright Jane Wagner, immortalized by Lily Tomlin, in an adaptation that reflects on human contradictions, the role of women in society and contemporary dilemmas.
In the play, Winits plays multiple characters that transit between social criticism, humor and philosophical observations. The narrative accompanies a creative consultant who, after a break, begins to live as a garbage picker, believing that she has received contact from extraterrestrials in search of intelligence signals on the planet. “The question is whether she lost her sanity or whether it was the reality that became incomprehensible,” explains the actress.
Thomas adds to the original text reflections on social transformations in the last four decades. “In 1985 there were no social networks or artificial intelligence. Today we live an era in which the word ‘waste’ goes beyond dirt: it is also crisis and calamity”, notes the director.
The scenario, signed by Thomas himself, bets on references to Andy Warhol's pop and everyday elements that become visual metaphors. A mobile tower, which alternates between costumes and scenery, composes the space next to mountains of waste, paintings of Rinaldo Esceiro and re-signified everyday objects.
