Rio will be the stage of the Brazilian inaugural stage of SailGP, the renowned international sailing racing championship, considered one of the most exciting competitions on water. The Rio stage of the Grand Prix will take place on May 3 and 4, 2025, in the stunning Guanabara Bay, with the iconic Pão de Açúcar as a backdrop. The action-packed weekend will mark SailGP's debut in South America and promises to be a landmark, further highlighting Rio as a traditional destination for world-renowned sports events.
The competition began in Dubai on 23 and 24 November 2024, with stops at destinations such as San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Geneva. The debut in Brazil, with the Carioca stage of May 3-4, 2025, will coincide with the arrival of the first South American team to the competition: the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team, announced earlier this year.
Since its first season, in 2019, SailGP stands out for the combination of state-of-the-art technology and impressive speed, with its F50 catamarans, which can reach up to 100 km/h. The teams represent eleven countries and are formed by elite athletes, who compete in emblematic locations around the world. The inclusion of Rio de Janeiro in the global circuit reinforces the state's position as an important hub for international sporting events. It is also worth noting that, as a curiosity, Sebastian Vettel, Formula 1 world champion, is co-investor of the German team.
