Rio Uphill: musical inspired by Broadway premiere in Rio
Rio Uphill: musical inspired by Broadway premiere in Rio
Rio de Janeiro gets another option for those who like musicals. Written by Juliana Pedroso and Matthew Gurren and directed by Gustavo Barchilon, “Rio Uphill” premiered in Brazil at the Adolpho Bloch Theatre in a season starting on October 31. Originally designed for Broadway, the play tells the trajectory of two young cariocas of different social realities and their challenges in a narrative that mixes romance and social issues.
The plot revolves around Miguel, born in the fictional Morro do Sol, and Daniel, a privileged young man from the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. A turnaround on New Year's Eve connects their destinies, and they, along with Michael's sister Julia, need to deal with the obstacles and tensions of an unequal society. The musical mixes Brazilian rhythms such as samba, forró, funk, rap and rock with the traditional Broadway sound. Tickets are still for sale.
