Solar presents the exhibition “Ney Matogrosso: I'd rather be” in honor of the artist’s 85th birthday. Curated by Bernardo Mosqueira, Matheus Morani and Pablo León de la Barra, the exhibition proposes an experimental approach on the legacy of one of the most influential names of Brazilian culture, bringing together historical works, photographs, audiovisual collection and unpublished works produced especially for the occasion. The event is part of Rio’s Art Week programming.
The exhibition brings together productions from more than 40 Brazilian and international artists, putting in dialogue works from different periods and languages. The selection addresses topics related to Ney Matogrosso's trajectory, such as transformation, desire, nature, dissent, collectivity and imagination, without following a chronological or biographical order.
In highlighting the impact of the singer’s libertarian behavior, “I prefer to be” reflects on his influence on visual arts, music and the Brazilian cultural imaginary since the 1970s. The show also shows how the defense of freedom and refusal to classifications continue to inspire artists from different generations. The show is on display until October 17th.
