About MUHCAB:
Neighbor to the Valongo Pier, in the Gamboa, the space is one of the 15 memory points that make up Small Africa, in the Port Region, and is located in the José Bonifácio Cultural Center.
In his visit, it will be possible to check some of the works of the collection, which holds approximately 2.5 thousand items between paintings, sculptures and photographs, as well as works of contemporary plastic artists, who dialogue with the space.
As a museum of territory, buildings and urban elements are also catalogued as a territorial collection.
Visitation starts at the entrance, where there's a frown welcoming. In the first room, named Conceição Evaristo, a gigantic map on the wall shows the routes of the slave trade from Africa to Brazil. The highlight there, however, is the installation “Weaving roots”, a ciranda with African fabrics to count the origins of ancestral peoples.
Then, in the room Agnaldo Camargo, a series of plants for healing purposes, each related to an orixá, and clay sculptures of the same orixás, made by Carmen Barros.
In the Great Othello room, texts and photos on topics such as the myth of racial democracy, dictatorship and resistance. The highlight are three screens by Nelson Sergeant, the bulwark of the First Mangueira Station, and a photographic collection with images by actress Ruth de Souza and the Experimental Teatro do Negro (TEN).
The Educational Room takes the name Master Marçal and will have activities for children and adolescents. Finally, the Abdias do Nascimento room brings a timeline and videos with the history of Muhcab and an interactive work where the visitor steps into the territory known as Little Africa.
In the auditorium, the idea is to promote meetings, lectures, seminars and debates. The courtyard will be staged with samba wheels, jongo and other rhythms, as well as meeting place, with food and babies inspired by Afro cuisine.
Attention! Before visiting the site, visit the official website to check that there is no change in programming/functioning.
