The Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art (MAM Rio) opens, between August 2025 and January 2026, the exhibition Gilberto Chateaubriand: a sensory collection, first shows in honor of the centenary of the birth of one of the greatest art collectors in Brazil. The curatorship is signed by Pablo Lafuente and Raquel Barreto.
Over nearly seven decades, businessman and diplomat Gilberto Chateaubriand (1925-2022) has gathered one of the most important private collections of modern and contemporary Brazilian art. Part of it is today in comfort at MAM Rio. With pieces from different generations, languages and territories, the collection builds a comprehensive picture of national artistic production in the last century.
The first painting acquired by Chateaubriand was Landscape of Itapuã José Pancetti, 1953. Since then, the collector has maintained close contact with the artists, visiting workshops and following creative processes. He used to describe this approach as “sensory”, a view that guided the selection of works.
The exhibition is organized into five cores. Origins revisits the 1981 exhibition that marked the arrival of the collection at MAM. Portraits highlights the collector's interest in the representation of artists. Borders brings together works that explore unprecedented geographical, formal and thematic territories. Artists presents the work of creators who had a remarkable presence in the collection. Finally, the S Monumental Aaron wins a constellation of works that express the plurality of brazilian art.
