Five decades after its debut, the ballet Amazon Forest returns to the stage of the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro for a commemorative season between 20 and 23 March. Created by choreographer and dancer Dalal Achcar in 1975, the show is one of the landmarks of national dance and the only classic of the entirely Brazilian genre, with music by Heitor Villa-Lobos and original choreography.
The show narrates the passion between a white man and a goddess of the forest, who, for love, becomes a woman. Their relationship, seen as profane by the indigenous peoples, becomes essential for the salvation of the forest, threatened by explorers who invade the village in search of natural riches.
Since his debut in 1975, Amazon Forest has conquered audiences in Brazil and abroad. The first performance featured the participation of Dame Margot Fonteyn and David Wall in the main roles. In 1985, the work was reformulated into two acts, a format that remains to this day.
With choreography by Dalal Achcar and Sir Frederick Ashton, scenarios and costumes signed by José Varona and lighting by Felício Mafra, the show reaffirms the importance of Brazilian dance on the world stage.
One of the most important names of ballet in Brazil, Dalal Achcar built a career marked by innovation and appreciation of classical dance in Brazil. Dancer, teacher and choreographer, studied with international masters and signed assemblies in cities such as New York, London, Tokyo and Hamburg.
In front of the Theatro Municipal Foundation of Rio de Janeiro, he was responsible for productions of great impact, such as The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Giselle and Don Quixote. He also brought renowned companies such as the London Royal Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet to Brazil, forming a faithful audience for classical dance.
