The oldest black neighborhood continuously inhabited in Rio, officially recognized as a quilombo in 2005, is a strong source of Afro-Brazilian culture. Pedra do Sal is recognized as the birthplace of samba and carnaval. The place was named after the huge stone found on the site, used to dry and sell salt at the time when the waters of the bay still reached its shores.
The Pedra do Sal, in the 19th and 20th centuries, was a destination for the quituiteiras, the “tias baianas”, besides the first candomblé terreiros of the city, as well as the emergence of the samba carioca and the first ranches and carnival cordões. They come from the boards of these women - and also from some men - some of the most acclaimed matches outside Bahia.
There is the restaurant Da Pedra, with menus and little Brazilian food to supply the long samba wheels. Small Africa is successful, bacon-covered Jiló skewer with sausage, okra and chicken, served with soft polenta and calabresa farofa.
