Our Lady of Peace Square

The Plaza Nossa Senhora da Paz is located between the streets Baron da Torre, Viscount de Pirajá, Maria Quitéria and Joana Angélica in Ipanema.

This square, which was part of the urbanization project undertaken by the Baron of Ipanema at the end of the 19th century, was initially called Plaza Coronel Henrique Valadares, in honor of the former mayor of Rio de Janeiro and friend of the Baron of Ipanema. Then, on October 31, 1917, it was reopened as Souza Ferreira Square and was only officially called Our Lady of Peace Square from 1934.

It was restructured between 1956 and 1957, by a project by urbanist Carlos Perry, and in 1989 received a work by artist Lucia Guerreiro, sculpture representing two children playing wheel in the center of a lake.

The square has undergone several modifications, the last for its gridding, which increased the visitation of children and elderly enjoying their gardens.

In the center of the square we find a great monument in bronze, homage to Pinheiro Machado, inaugurated in 1931, work of the artist Leão Veloso.

In Praça, every Friday, there is the free trade fair of Ipanema, one of the most traditional in Rio de Janeiro!

The region and the Plaza Nossa Senhora da Paz stand out for the large number of shops around it. Many bars and restaurants make this part of Rio a great meeting point for cariocas and tourists.
