New San José Market

Located in Laranjeiras, the New São José Market is one of the most traditional historical heritages in Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated as a popular market in 1944, during the Getúlio Vargas administration, space became an important meeting point in the neighborhood and was recognized as a Carioca Cultural Heritage Site in 1994. After remaining closed for seven years, it was completely restored by Prefeitura do Rio and reopened on September 21, 2025, starting a new phase as a gastronomic and cultural hub.

The New Mercado São José is the highlight of a special episode of the Rio Heritage series, project of the Riotur in partnership with the Instituto Rio Patrimônio da Humanidade (IRPH), which values the spaces recognized as Cultural Heritage Cariocas and the stories that are part of the city's identity.
