Located in São Cristóvão, the National Museum is the oldest museum in Brazil. Founded in the early 19th century, it had its first headquarters in Campo de Santana, in the Center of Rio, being transferred in 1892 to the Palace of São Cristóvão — a building that had already housed the Portuguese royal family and then the Brazilian one. After the 2018 fire, the museum undergoes a wide process of restoration and is partially reopened only at special events. Among the items that resisted fire, the Bendegó meteorite and the skeleton of a whale with impressive 15.7 meters long stand out.
