Museum of Justice - Rio de Janeiro
The historic building, named as Building Desembargador Caetano Pinto de Miranda Montenegro, which today houses the Museum of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro has undergone several transformations during the 20th century.
Built in 1926, in eclectic style, it was originally the headquarters of the Federal District Court of Appeal. Eleven years later, in 1937, it became the seat of the Federal District Court of Appeal. In 1946, the building was reused as the seat of the Federal District Court of Justice. With the creation of the State of Guanabara, in 1960, the building began to host the Court of Justice of the State of Guanabara. In 1975, it was the turn of the building to become the seat of the Court of Lance of the State of Rio de Janeiro, followed by the seat of the II Court of Lance of the State of Rio de Janeiro in 1979. Finally, in 1985, the building became the seat of the Tribunal de Alçada Criminal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. In 1998, the former headquarters was transformed into the Museum of Justice and other administrative units of the Rio de Janeiro State Judiciary, preserving the history of the judiciary in the region. The Museum of Justice is an important cultural heritage, which receives visitors interested in knowing the history, memory and functioning of the judiciary, and has the mission to preserve, research and disseminate the memory of the judiciary and cultivate justice values through culture and art, contributing to the social transformation and strengthening of citizenship.
