The main point of landing and trade of enslaved Africans in the Americas worked between 1811 and 1831, when transatlantic trafficking was prohibited. During this period, some one million people landed in Valongo to be sold and transported to various parts of the country. The site was revealed in 2011, during the archaeological excavations developed for the implementation of the “Maravilha Port” project. In 2017, UNESCO included Valongo on the list of world cultural heritage, for recognizing it “the most important physical evidence associated with the historic arrival of enslaved Africans on the American continent.”
