Fort Duke of Caxias
The tour at Fort Duque de Caxias (Forte do Leme) comprises an ecological walk in the area of environmental protection of the Atlantic Forest and a visit to the historical site of the site.
The Fort Duke of Caxias, known as the Fort of the Leme, was originally built between 1776 and 1799 by order of the Marquis of Lavradio, when Brazil was still part of the Portuguese Empire. He was formerly called the Watchman’s Fort or the Spy because he had no artillery and served to alert the other fortifications about the arrival of ships in Rio de Janeiro.
Moreover, the military history of this fort is full of events. Its members participated in revolts such as the Fort of Copacabana (1922), the Revolt of the Battleship São Paulo (1924), the action against the merchant ship Baden (1930), the Revolution of 1932, the Communist Intentone (1935), the Integralist Movement (1938), World War II (1945) and the Intervention of the Cruiser Tamandaré (1955).
The environmental protection area of the Leme, open to public visitation, belongs to the fort, where you can observe several attractions of the city, such as the Cristo Redentor, the Pão de Açúcar and the beach of Copacabana.
