City Municipal Natural Park
A great refuge in the heart of the Gávea, consisting of closed forest and large gardens, which also houses the Historical Museum of the City of Rio de Janeiro.
In the Gávea district, in an area of 500,000 m2, an old private property donated to the government in 1939 today gives way to the City Park, a refuge amid urban movement. Although part of the park has been reforested, there are still native sections of Atlantic Forest.
Rows of palm trees, fruit trees and rare species, such as Brazilian wood trees, share the attention of visitors with the mountains that surround space and with the animals that live there. A beautiful lake was created with the dam of a stream, making the walk even more pleasant. Suitable for picnics and relaxation, the site offers visitors a space for leisure and hiking. The park still houses the Historical Museum of the City, which preserves about 20,000 pieces, including the throne of Dom João VI, sculptures of Mestre Valentim and engravings of the French painter and designer Jean-Baptiste Debret.
