History
One of the most imposing and beautiful buildings in Rio de Janeiro, the Theatro Municipal, inaugurated on July 14, 1909, is one of the main shows houses in Brazil and one of the most important in South America. His history blends with the trajectory of the country's culture. Over a little more than a century of existence, Theatro has received the greatest international artists, as well as the main Brazilian names, dance, music and opera.
At first, he received mainly opera and dance companies from most of Italy and France. Starting in the 1930s, he began to rely on his own artistic bodies: Symphony Orchestra, Coro and Ballet, which remain responsible for the official artistic seasons.
Since its inauguration, the Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro has had four major reforms: 1934, 1975, 1996 and 2008. The first of them increased the capacity of the room to 2,205 places and, despite the complexity of the work, it was held in three months – currently, the Theatre has 2,252 seats. In 1975, works of restoration and modernization were carried out and, in the same year, the Production Technical Center was created. In 1996, the annex building was built with rehearsal rooms for the Choir, Symphony Orchestra and Ballet. The reform initiated in 2008 and completed in 2010 focused on the restoration and modernisation of facilities.
