Sergeant Pepper Block exalts diversity

With parade on Monday of Carnaval, 20/02, block that honors the Beatles presented exclusive area for People with Disabilities (PcDs)

The eclectic mix of Beatles and marchinhas has yielded to Sergeant Pepper's Block - and to the foliões that follow it - a unique sound in the Carnaval of Rio. After three years without performing, the group took to the Aterro do Flamengo, in the South Zone of Rio, a crowd of fans on the morning of Monday (20/2).

In his 11th parade, the Sergeant drew attention to the cause of inclusion. In addition to a GBP interpreter on stage, the block reserved an area for disabled digital influencers (PCDs). The initiative aims to emphasize the democratic and aggregating character of the party.

One of the most lively in space, the drag queen Kitana, militant of the LGBTQIA+ cause, reiterated that the Carnaval is a democratic party by nature, and that inclusion should be a mission to be followed by the blocks.

" It is important for deaf people like mine that the blocks have interpreters of pounds, so that we can understand the letters" he explained.

Family united by the Beatles

In the audience, the revelers sang songs immortalized by Liverpool quartet, such as "Help", "Yesterday" and "Wanna hold your hands". Father and daughter, Lola and Mauricio came in Beatles shirts and made sure to stand right in front of the stage, even with the scorching sun:

"My father was always a Beatles fan, but I only discovered the band a short time ago and fell in love. This is my first parade by Sergeant Pepper and I made sure to give him this shirt as a gift," she said.
