History of the San José Market
Opened in 1942 by President Getúlio Vargas, the Mercado São José emerged as an initiative to offer cheaper food during a period of economic crisis caused by World War II. Before that, in the period of Imperial Brazil, the land where the market is located today was a senzala for slaves who worked on a farm in the region, where today is Guinle Park.
Even before its official reopening, the São José Market is already a darling of the residents of Laranjeiras and the South Zone, who look forward to enjoying the new phase of this space that combines tradition and innovation!
