It will be the first time that Brazil and all of South America will receive this highly prestigious competition, which takes place every two years. Rio's candidacy competed with other cities in Australia, China, Germany, Iraq and the United States to host the 2029 event. The city also participated in the contest to receive the 2027 World Cup, but the choice fell on Astana, Kazakhstan.
The Table Tennis World Championship has been held since 1926. Between 1929 and 1957, the tournament took place annually, and thereafter began to be held every two years. Hungary was dominant in the first decades, conquering eight of the first nine editions among men. The Japanese were the first Asians to break with European domination, winning the title in 1952.
China is the biggest winner in the history of the competition, accumulating a total of 79 medals: 23 gold, 19 silver and 37 bronze. Second in the historical ranking is Hungary, with 39 medals (10 diamonds, 12 silvers and 17 bronzes). Japan appears in third place, with 21 medals, 9 diamonds, 4 silvers and 8 bronzes.
