Rio continues at a rate of growth and the numbers prove this trajectory. In the first half of 2025, the city registered a real increase of 37.2% in ISS collection from airport services, compared to the same period of the previous year. Between January and June, R$ 34.4 million were collected, compared to R$ 25.1 million collected in 2024, already considering the discount of inflation.
The data are part of a report published by Prefeitura do Rio, through the Riotur and the Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development. The survey analyzed activities such as airport logistics, storage, freight handling, operational support and airport use.
One of the highlights was the subgroup referring to the movement of passengers, which recorded real growth of 22.3% in the period. Second Riotur and the Secretariat, this result is a reflection of the coordination policy between the airports of the city and the joint measure between City Hall, State Government and Federal Government that established the limit of flights in Santos Dumont, balancing the operation with Galeão International Airport.
Growth generating jobs
In addition to the direct impact on the collection, the figures reveal important advances in job generation, economic development and competitiveness of Rio as a global destination for tourism and business. The study also highlights international examples, such as the United States, where about 500 airports account for 9.6 million jobs and move US$ 1.1 trillion, equivalent to 7% of US GDP.
With a strong tourist and economic vocation, the Wonderful City receives hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors annually for cultural, sporting and business events. The service sector, which accounts for 86% of the city's GDP, also benefits directly, with emphasis on areas such as health, technology, finance and construction.
According to the Secretariat of Economic Development, the consolidation of a robust airport sector can, in the next ten years, add R$ 50.6 billion to the GDP of the State of Rio and generate 684 thousand new jobs. This advance would still have national repercussions, contributing 0.6% to the Brazilian GDP.
