The winter in Rio is increasingly consolidated as a season of great events and intense tourist movement. The expectation of the Prefeitura do Rio, through the Riotur and the Municipal Secretariats of Economic Development and Tourism, is that the city will receive 2.8 million tourists between July and September 2026, moving R $ 7.4 billion in the Rio economy.
The projection represents a 5% increase in the number of national tourists, 15% among international visitors and a real increase of 7.8% in economic movement compared to the winter of 2025. The figures reinforce the consolidation of Rio as a destination for the whole year, driven by a diverse calendar of events and a unique combination of natural, cultural, sporting and leisure attractions.
According to data from the Carioca Tourism Observatory (SMTUR), the city received 2.7 million tourists during the winter of 2025, of which 83.9% were Brazilian and 16.1% foreigners. During the period, visitors moved R$ 6.9 billion in the economy of the municipality.
Part of this performance is explained by the city's official calendar of events, Rio All Year Round, prepared by Riotur. Throughout the season, Rio receives a diverse programme, with julin parties, broadcasts from the World Cup, major music festivals such as the Rock in Rio, as well as cultural, sporting and gastronomic attractions that move different regions of the city and strengthen its tourist attractiveness.
Among the main events of the period are the Rock in Rio, Gastronomy River, Winter Festival, among others that attract visitors from all over Brazil and abroad.
The estimate of economic movement was calculated based on the average expenditure of R$ 2,208 per Brazilian tourist and of R$ 4,494 per international visitor, according to the study Tourist Panorama – Domestic and International Tourism 2025, from the Institute of Research and Analysis (IFec RJ). The survey considers expenses on accommodation, food, transportation, fuel, entertainment, tourist attractions, telecommunications and shopping, highlighting the positive impact of tourism in various sectors of the Rio economy.
