Rio again gained international projection by integrating the context of the list of 20 most desirable destinations to visit in 2026, released by the British newspaper travel team The Telegraph. Pointed as one of the main showcases in Brazil in the global scenario, the Rio destination symbolizes a moment of recovery and appreciation of urban, cultural and nature tourism in the country.
According to the publication, a number of recent events have helped to put Brazil back on the radar of international travelers. Among the highlights mentioned are Prince William's visit to Rio and official data that indicate significant growth in the number of foreign tourists. In this scenario, the capital of Rio de Janeiro is consolidated as the country's gateway, bringing together attributes that dialogue directly with the profile of the contemporary tourist, seeking cultural diversity and contact with natural landscapes.
Also according to The Telegraph, geographic location is a decisive factor for the choice of Rio as a destination. The city has relatively shorter flights compared to Europe, especially when compared to other destinations in the southern hemisphere, which makes travel more comfortable and has less time zone impact. The climate also appears as a differential: as the European winter advances, Rio allows an outdoor routine that is part of its lifestyle.
Record number of tourists
International recognition meets the significant numbers recorded by the city in recent months. Between January and November 2025, Rio surpassed the 1.9 million foreign visitors mark, consolidating one of the best recent performances in the tourism sector. Another highlight was the inclusion of Senate Street, in the city center, in the list of the most detached streets in the world, elaborated by Time Out magazine, reinforcing the cultural and creative potential of the central region.
Major events also contributed directly to this growth. The Todo Mundo project in Rio brought free presentations by international artists of great projection, such as Madonna, in 2024, and Lady Gaga, in 2025, at Copacabana Beach. The initiatives resulted in significant increases in the flow of foreign tourists, with an approximate growth of 28% and 55% in the respective periods.
The calendar of events follows as one of the pillars of the strategy to promote destiny. In 2026, the city begins the year with the World's Greatest Turn, which promises to move different regions, celebrating the arrival of 2026 and strengthening Rio's vocation to receive large audiences and experiences of global reach.
