Paradise of Tuiuti announces homage to Tia Ciata in Carnaval 2027

Preparations for the 2027 Carnaval already begin to move behind the scenes from samba schools of the Rio Special Group. On the night of Thursday (5), the Paradise of Tuiuti went ahead and became the first elite of the carnaval carioca to announce the plot that will lead to the Sambódromo Marquis de Sapucaí in the next parade.

The school of São Cristóvão will present the plot “Ciata: the black mother of samba”, a tribute to one of the most important figures in the history of samba and Afro-Brazilian culture in the country. The proposal is to rescue the trajectory and legacy of Tia Ciata, a fundamental character in the formation of musical and religious traditions that marked the emergence of samba in Rio.

The artistic project will be carried out by the carnivalesco Renato Lage, who signs the visual development of the parade. The text of the plot will be prepared by historian and writer Luiz Antonio Simas in partnership with the composer Cláudio Russo. The expectation is that the school builds a narrative that mixes history, religiosity, popular culture and the strength of black ancestry.

Born as Hilária Batista de Almeida, in the municipality of Santo Amaro, in Recôncavo Baiano, Tia Ciata played a decisive role in the preservation of African traditions in Brazil. At the age of 16, he participated in the founding of the Brotherhood of the Good Death in the city of Cachoeira, one of the most important religious fraternities of African origin in the country.

Started in Candomblé as Oxum's daughter in the home of Bamboché, of the Ketu nation, she took this knowledge with her when she decided to move to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 22. In the then federal capital, he built a new family by marrying João Baptista da Silva, a public servant with whom he had 14 children.

In the city, Tia Ciata became a central figure in the region known as Small Africa, an area that concentrated black communities and important cultural manifestations. His home was famous for bringing together musicians, sambaists and practitioners of Afro-Brazilian religions, becoming a space of cultural resistance and diffusion of samba.

The choice of plot reinforces the recent tendency of samba schools to value historical characters linked to the formation of Brazilian cultural identity. The official presentation of the theme and the team responsible for the Carnaval 2027 of the Tuiuti Paradise is scheduled to take place next month, in an event that should gather components, fans and guests of the association.
