From funk baptism to Boitatá orchestra: Rio prepares for a weekend of big blocks

The Carnaval of Rua do Rio de Janeiro follows in full steam and, from Friday (6) to Sunday (8), thousands of revelers will have fun at various points in the city, with a schedule that walks by rhythms such as funk, samba, marchinhas, frevo, afoxé and popular Brazilian music. From the Center to the South Zone, passing by Santa Teresa, Paquetá Island and West Zone, traditional and contemporary blocks occupy the streets celebrating the diversity of the country's largest popular party.

On Friday (6), there is Inova that I like concentrating at 8am in Flamengo, Metal Zone, at 16h, in Bangu, Virtual Block, at 18h, in Leme and more.

In the Gil Black Circuit, in the Center of Rio, the Favorite Block will transform the Street First of March into a great funk ball open on Saturday (7). With a repertoire that mixes classic and current successes of the funk carioca, the block attracts a young and diverse audience, known for creativity in fantasies, a lot of brightness and energy from the beginning to the end of the parade.

In Santa Teresa, the traditional Earth Sky, which completes 25 years of history, re-colors the hillsides of the neighborhood with its playful procession, full of giant dolls, legtails and vibrant costumes. This year's parade pays tribute to Jorge Ben Jor, icon of Brazilian music and forerunner of sambalanço, with a repertoire filled with classics that promise to thrill revelries of all ages.

Still on Saturday, the Block Strategy opens a new scenario for its parade, occupying for the first time the edge of the Posto 0, in Gloria, overlooking the Pão de Açúcar. The presentation honors the 50 years of Jorge Ben Jor’s album “Africa Brasil”, with powerful rereadings by Bateria Cabulosa. The block also includes in the repertoire a special souvenir to Luiz Melodia, who would be 75 years old in 2026.

In the South Zone, the traditional Sympathy is Almost Love parade in Ipanema, celebrates its 42nd edition with a tribute to peoples from Brazil, exalting ancestry and cultural diversity. At Leblon, did you imagine him? Now Crush drags revelers in a mood of party and relaxation.

Saturday's schedule is also extended by Laranjeiras, with the Xupa Mas No Baba, and the Island of Paquetá, where the Pearl of Guanabara has been receiving the public since the first hours of the morning.

Boitata string parades in the Gil Black Circuit this Sunday

On Sunday (8), the highlight is due to the Cordão do Boitatá, which parades in the Center of Rio, in the Circuito Preta Gil. Celebrating 30 years of history, he is the first member of the city's megablock group and keeps his trademark: a large procession without electric trio, conducted by an orchestra with dozens of musicians. The repertoire includes sambas, marchinhas, frevos and afoxés, as well as arrangements of great names of Brazilian music, in a parade recognized as the intangible Cultural Heritage of Rio.

The climate of folia spreads across other parts of the city throughout the day. In Largo de São Francisco de Paula, the Fire and Passion, with a name inspired by the music of singer Wando, animates the public with cheesy hits, successes of the 1980s, 90s, and carnival songs. At Gloria, the Chora Me League brings together fans of the sertanejo in an animated parade full of popular hits. In the morning, the Giants of Lira animates the Garden Square Laranjeiras, keeping alive the tradition of family blocks.

Among the most exciting moments of Sunday is the parade of farewell of the Suvaco de Cristo, which performs its 40th and final presentation in the Jardim Botânico, marking the history of the Carnaval of Rio. In Ipanema, the Empolga at 9 is an option for those who prefer to enjoy the afternoon folia, while at Barra da Tijuca, Banda da Barra celebrates 43 years of samba and tradition on Avenida Lúcio Costa.
