The cultural heritage of Rio is present far beyond the monuments, buildings and landscapes that are part of the image of the city. It is also in cultural manifestations, in knowledge, in customs, in traditions and places that, over time, have gained meaning and have become part of memory and carioca identity.
It is a heritage that is in architecture, but also in music, gastronomy, parties, ways of doing and establishments that accompany the life of the city for generations. Preserving this patrimony means recognizing these stories, valuing their cultural importance and contributing to their continued being part of Rio's memory.
Circuits of the Cultural Heritage Carioca
It is in this context that the Circuits of the Cultural Heritage Carioca, an initiative that gathers plates installed at different points of the city to identify places, characters and stories of relevance to the memory of Rio.
More than signaling an address, the plates help to tell what is behind each location, recording trajectories, events and characters that contributed to the formation of the Rio cultural identity.
The first plates were installed in the 1990s. Since 2010, the Carioca Cultural Heritage Circuits have gathered these stories in different themes related to the culture and history of the city, expanding the recognition of places and references that are part of the Rio heritage.
According to data from Rio World Heritage Institute (IRPH), currently there are approximately 288 plates installed in Rio de Janeiro, distributed between different circuits and regions of the city.
Among these circuits is the Boat Circuit, which recognizes establishments linked to the history and culture of the city.
Boat Circuit
The bars and boats occupy a particular place in the memory of Rio. Some of these establishments have gone through decades following the transformations of their neighborhoods, receiving different generations of frequenters and becoming references of culture and everyday life in Rio.
The Botequin Circuit gives visibility to this trajectory. The plates identify establishments of cultural relevance and record stories that help to understand why certain addresses have become part of the memory of the city.
This recognition also shows that cultural heritage can be present in spaces of daily living, where habits, recipes, knowledge, encounters and traditions are transmitted between generations.
The botequins thus represent a dimension of cultural heritage that remains alive and in constant transformation. These are places that preserve references from other times while still being part of Rio's contemporary life.
The Circuit of the Botequins thus integrates a set of initiatives aimed at the valorization, recognition and preservation of Rio's cultural memory.
Heritage that is part of the identity of Rio
Recognizing places, characters and demonstrations that help tell the story of the city is also broadening the look on what can be considered cultural heritage.
In Rio, this memory is present both in the great symbols of the city and in traditions, customs, living spaces and establishments that have passed through generations.
The Circuits of the Cultural Heritage Carioca contribute to give visibility to these stories and reinforce the importance of preserving references that help build the identity of the city.
