Cristo Redentor completes 95 years with special programming

O Cristo Redentor celebrates 95 years in October, with a series of religious, cultural and social activities throughout the month. The official anniversary date is October 12 (Monday), when the monument also receives tributes to Our Lady Aparecida.

The celebrations began with the campaign “Classic is to play”, promoted by the Friends of the Redeemer. The initiative aims to raise 10,000 toys and children's books by October 31, for children in situations of social vulnerability. Donations can be made at the collection points or the online platform of the campaign.

Among the news is the launch of a special edition of the magazine Know More about Cristo Redentor, with the Class of Monica, published by MSP Studios. On October 9, the calendar also celebrates the 142 years of the Corcovado Train, with Mass in thanksgiving and launch of a book on the history of the railway.

The 12th focuses on the main activities of the anniversary. The program starts at 7am, with the opening of the exhibition “Shows Cristo Redentor – Towards 100 Years” at the Painful Visitor Center. Then there will be a Mass in thanksgiving, the launch of a commemorative philatelic seal developed in partnership with the Post Offices and a ceremony related to the production of the medals of the 95 years, created with the Mint of Brazil.

The celebrations also include the Love Action of the Cristo Redentor, with free services for people in a situation of social vulnerability, in the Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. Throughout the month, other activities mark important dates, institutional partnerships and solidarity initiatives.

On 27 October, the Archdiocesan Shrine Cristo Redentor and the Redemptor Institute signed a cooperation agreement with the Dominican Republic's Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro. The “Classic is Play” campaign ends on the 31st, last day to contribute to the collection of toys and children’s books.

October 9 (Friday)

• 10h: Mass in thanksgiving for the 142 years of the Train of the Corcovado, presided by the Rector of the Shrine Cristo Redentor, Father Omar.
• Book Launch Corcovado 140 + Train On the tracks to 150 years, in the Corcovado Cultural Train Space. Income will be allocated to social projects supported by Friends of the Redeemer.

October 11th (Sunday)

• 22h: Prayer Vigil of the Youth Sector of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro for the 95 years of the Cristo Redentor, in the Archdiocesan Shrine Cristo Redentor.

October 12 (Monday) — 95th anniversary of the Cristo Redentor

• 7h: Opening of the exhibition “Show Cristo Redentor – Towards the 100 Years”, at the Visitors' Pain Centre.
• 7:30. Mass in thanksgiving for the 95 years of the Cristo Redentor and in honor of Our Lady Aparecida, presided by Cardinal Orani João Tempesta, at the Visitors' Centre Paineiras.
• 8:30. Launch of the commemorative philatelic seal of 95 years, created by the artist Oskar Metsavaht in partnership between the Cristo Redentor Shrine and the Post Office, at the Paineiras Visitor Center.
• 8:40. Ceremony of uncharacterization of the features used in the production of the medals of the 95 years, developed by the Shrine Cristo Redentor in partnership with the Mint of Brazil, at the Visitors' Center Paineiras.

October 15 (Thursday)

• 19h: Illumination of the monument in the color of the Sustainable Development Goal (ODS) 4 — Quality Education, of the United Nations (UN) Agenda 2030, in honor of Teachers' Day.

October 16 (Friday)

• Celebration of the World Bread Day by the Cristo Redentor Shrine and the Eastern Social Work One – The Sun, with distribution of bread produced by the Artisan Bakery Project for people in a situation of social vulnerability.
• 11: Mass in thanksgiving for the five years of twinning between the Cristo Redentor and the Christ Redeemere di Maratea at the Cristo Redentor Shrine.
• 18h: Second stage of the twinning ceremony between the Cristo Redentor Shrine and the Colosseum, in the Cristo Redentor Shrine.
• 20h: Lighting of the monument with the colors of the flag of Italy.

October 22 (Thursday)

• Pilgrimage of the image of São João Paulo II by sights of Rio de Janeiro. The image will be taken to the Vatican to receive the blessing of Pope Leo XIV.

27 October (Tuesday)

• 20h: Mass and signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between the Cristo Redentor Shrine and the Dominican Republic General Consulate in Rio de Janeiro.

31 October (Saturday)

• Closing the social campaign “Classic is Play”, which collects toys and children’s books for children in situations of social vulnerability.
