The Corcovado Train, one of the most emblematic tourist attractions in Rio, completes 141 years on Thursday (9) with a special schedule at Cosme Velho Station. The celebration includes mass, musical presentation, birthday cake and the release of the book “Corcovado 140+ train”, written by Marilia Neves, president of the company.
The work rescues the history of the railway from the dream idealized by Dom Pedro II to the latest modernizations, such as the acquisition of the fourth generation of compositions, the creation of a Cultural Space and the installation of solar panels. The book also highlights the construction of the monument to the Cristo Redentor, the distinguished visitors who used the train and technological evolution that transformed the old steam trains into modern electric trains.
The celebrations begin at 9:30, with the presentation of the Municipal Guard Band of Rio de Janeiro. At 10 a.m., the Rector of the Cristo Redentor Shrine, Father Omar, will celebrate a Mass on Thanksgiving for the 141 years of the Corcovado Train. The traditional congratulations and the cut of the cake are scheduled for 11:30, followed by the release of the book.
The oldest tourist railway in the country, the Corcovado Train transports about 1.5 million passengers annually through the Tijuca National Park, one of the largest urban forests in the world. In addition to offering one of the most famous views of Rio, the route was consolidated as an icon of Brazilian engineering and tourism.
