The 2026 World Cup can move up to R$ 244.9 million in the economy of Rio de Janeiro during the Brazilian national team games. The estimate is part of the study “Potential Economic Impact of the Brazilian Games in the 2026 World Cup in Carioca Economy”, elaborated by the Prefeitura do Rio, through the Riotur and the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE).
The calculation considers the most favorable scenario for the Brazilian campaign in the tournament: the contest of the eight possible matches, with the arrival in the final and the conquest of the world hexacampeonato.
According to the survey, each advance of the team in the competition represents an additional boost to the city's economy. The estimate is that each match played by Brazil manages about R$ 30.6 million in economic movement.
The three games of the group phase have the potential to move R $ 91.8 million. With the classification for the qualifying phases, this value can reach R$ 122.4 million. In the final octaves, the projection rises to R$ 153 million; in the final quarter, to R$ 183.6 million; and in the semifinals, to R$ 214.2 million. If the Brazilian national team reaches the decision of the tournament, the economic movement can reach R$ 244.9 million.
The calculations take into account the costs of fans with transportation, tickets, food and drinks for consumption at home, thematic props, as well as expenses made in bars, restaurants, parties and other meeting places to accompany the games.
Estimates refer to the study Carioca Football Economy and consider the behavior of the fans of the four major clubs in the city. Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama and Botafogo – which traditionally accompany departures in bars, restaurants, stadiums and meetings with friends and family.
In addition to the sectors of bars, restaurants, tourism, commerce and entertainment, the study points to benefits for the trade in sports goods, the holding of thematic events and investments in infrastructure focused on public broadcasts and celebrations during the tournament.
The complete study is available at Rio's Economic Observatory.
