Beer economy in Rio: study highlights sector impact in the city

The Mondial de la Bière, considered the largest international festival of handcrafted beers in Brazil, was the scene not only of tastings and news from the sector, but also of the dissemination of an unprecedented economic panorama. During the 12th edition of the event, held between September 11 and 14 at Píer Mauá, Prefeitura do Rio, through the Municipal Secretariat of Economic Development (SMDE) and Riotur, presented the study “Economy of Beer in Rio”.
According to the survey, the sector of bars and restaurants is one of the engines of the Rio economy: there are 5.6 thousand registered establishments, responsible for 65.4 thousand formal jobs. This number represents 7% of the total in Brazil. The busy wage mass reaches R$ 2 billion per year, with a higher concentration of vacancies in Barra da Tijuca, Centro and Copacabana.
The study also reinforces the growth of the production and consumption of handcrafted beers in city, a trend that has stimulated initiatives to value the sector, such as the creation of Rua da Beere, in Rua da Carioca.
Beer Street in the Mondial
To bring the public closer to the project, City Hall led to Mondial de la Bière a theme booth of Rua da Beer, an initiative of SMDE and CCPar, with support of Riotur. Signed by architect Luisa Moraes and produced by Ilha Entertainment, the space recreated the atmosphere of the new Rio beer polo, inspired by the bars already installed on Rua da Carioca.
The attraction received about 6,000 visitors in four days and offered handmade coffee from participating breweries, as well as cultural activations. The expectation is that Rua da Beer move R$ 222 million in four years, generating 500 new jobs and a salary mass of R$ 41.8 million.
Combining the tradition of Rio's boemia and the economic potential of artisanal beer, the project is part of the Reviver Centro program, which seeks to revitalize the central region of the city, attracting new businesses, residents and tourists. O
