Beach and Block: From São Conrado to Leme, associations parade in the most paradisiacal scenarios in Rio

The street Carnaval takes place all over the city, mainly on the shores of the beaches of Rio. From São Conrado to Leme, passing by Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, Barra da Tijuca and Flamengo. All these places, which are owners of paradisiacal and beloved scenarios in the heart of the Rio de Janeiro, will be the stage of about 33 traditional and infantile blocks in one of the largest folias in Brazil.

One of the most famous blocks to celebrate the sands of Ipanema, the “Sympathy is Almost Love”, will parade on February 7, at 12am. The block was created in 1985, amid the ‘Direct Já’ campaign. The ‘Simpa’, as affectionately called by its admirers, conquers and packs the carnaval with an audience of ages ranging from 8 to 80 years. The party begins at General Osório Square and takes the edge of Ipanema and Leblon. The club will hold a second parade in the same place, on February 15, at 2pm.

Another coming from Ipanema is the “Empolga at 9”, which was born in 2003, from the union of a crowd that played a batuque at Posto 9. This year, the block will have its first party on February 8th, at 12am, with meeting scheduled at Av. Vieira Souto, 370. The Association will have a second parade on the 15th of the same month, at 12 noon, at the Leme.

At Flamengo Beach, the “Friends of the Onça” makes the holiday on February 14, at 7am. The block follows the boardwalk of the famous “Caribrejo”, as the beach was nicknamed by its lovers. The block is known for its orchestra of blowing and percussion, the front committee dressed as jaguars (the Onetes), as well as artists with wooden legs.

The “Club of Samba”, a block founded in 1971 by João Nogueira, one of the largest samba players in Rio, and currently played by his son, singer Diogo Nogueira, will parade on February 17, in Copacabana, at 7am. With tradition in the blood, the block used to pass in the central region of the city until it moved to Copacabana. The plots take letters of a political nature, satirizing the current situation of the country.
