Two Popes at the TotalEnergies Theatre – Sala Adolpho Bloch

After winning public and criticism in São Paulo, the show “Two Papas” arrives in Rio for the season at the TotalEnergies Theatre – Sala Adolpho Bloch. The play depicts a fictitious encounter, but inspired by real facts, between two leaders of the Catholic Church with opposing world views: the conservative Pope Benedict XVI and the then Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, future Pope Francis.

With the direction of Munir Kanaan, the assembly is starring Zécarlos Machado and Celso Frateschi, interpreters of Benedict XVI and Bergoglio, respectively. The show won the Archangel Culture Award 2025 in the Best Drama category, while the two actors were nominated for the APCA Award for Best Actor.

The plot unfolds when Bergoglio travels to Rome determined to ask for retirement. However, he is surprised by an invitation from Pope Benedict XVI to a private conversation. Amid the pressures faced by the Catholic Church, the two begin an intense dialogue marked by ideological differences, moments of humor and reflections on faith, responsibility and transformation. Two Popes are on the air until July 5.
