Forte Duque de Caxias

The Forte Duque de Caxias, known as Forte do Leme, was originally built between 1776 and 1799 by order of the Marquis de Lavradio, when Brazil was still part of the Portuguese Empire. It was formerly called the Fort of the Vigia or of the Espia because it had no bomb and served to alert the other fortifications about the arrival of ships to Rio de Janeiro.

The area of environmental protection of the Leme, open to public visit, belong to the fort, from which you can observe various attractions of the city, such as the Cristo Redentor, the Pão de Açúcar and the Copacabanashore.
