The original core of its powerful acquis, calculated today at about ten million items, is the old bookstore of D. José organized under the inspiration of Diogo Barbosa Machado, Abade de Santo Adrião de Sever, to replace the Royal Livraria, whose origin was reassembled to the collections of books of John I and his son D. Duarteزل, and which was consumed by the fire following November 1755.

The Biblioteca Nacional Acervo is constantly growing from donations, acquisitions and the law of the legal deposit, which ensures the registration and keeping of the national intellectual production, and allows the control, development and dissemination of the current Brazilian Bibliography, as well as the defence and preservation of the national language and culture. لأغراض الإيداع القانوني، يسجل أي عمل، أي دعم مادي، للبيع أو التوزيع المجاني.
